Lotus Sutra : meaning

THE Lotus Sutra is one of the most important sacred texts of Mahāyāna Buddhism. It is considered the final great teaching of the Buddha, complete and sufficient for salvation. It encourages each person to undertake a deep inner transformation by committing to supporting others and contributing positively to society.

This teaching affirms that enlightenment is accessible to all, like the lotus flower which develops in a muddy and muddy environment (difficulties of daily life) to blossom above the water (enlightenment) and become a symbol of purity, beauty and nobility. 

THE Lotus Sutra is therefore the expression of a universal humanism, which establishes as supreme value the character sacred of the life.

Meaning and Symbol of the lotus 

For many years, the lotus has always been a divine symbol in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It symbolizes divine beauty, purity of body, speech and spirit, as it floats and flourishes above the marshy and muddy waters of attachment and desire. 

The particularity of the lotus is that the seed and the flower appear together. The symbolism of the lotus in Buddhism also relates to the simultaneity of the cause (the seed) and the effect (the flower) in the law of causality of the universe, which is one of the major concepts of Buddhist philosophy. 

The lotus draws its vital substance from the mud and then flourishes above the water. The mud represents suffering, troubles, desires, which are the very soil of our development. It is therefore possible to transform one's karma through enlightenment, the attainment of Buddhahood, thanks to our awakening to the law of causality.
